Ceramic Pieces
These ceramic cups were made by Clare Wakefield. I really like these cups they are so different and unique. You never really see cups with holes in them, and to me that makes them even more beautiful. You cant use these cups as actual cups but there is so much more you can use them for. They just popped out at me when I saw them. I think that she threw them on the wheel then carved the holes in them.
This piece is made by Megan Ellis. This piece is very elegant and simple yet very beautiful. I love this and its simplicity. This was probably made from slabs then carved some circle holes so that the light could show.
Etching
First you pick at least two different glazes, then dip the pot in the lighter of the two glazes and let it dry. Then dip it into the darker glaze. Once its dry you take a mini-ribbon tool and gently carve a design in the top layer of glaze. Then you fire it in a kiln. I love the finished results its different and you don't have to mess around with the wet clay to make a cool design, and you can make all the different glazes show. Yes, we would be able to use this technique in class.
Wax Resist
First dunk your whole pot into a light glaze, paint on a pattern with wash like cobalt oxide (blue) or iron oxide (brown), than paint wax resist over the wash pattern you just painted. When the wax is dry, dunk your pot into a second glaze. You can add more detail after the second glaze. You can use bisque firing. I really like this its so pretty and you can make different patterns with the was, and it seems like a fun way to add some color and detail. Yes, you can use it in class if you have the wax resist.
Irresistible Cups
When I saw these on the internet I really liked them. But i didn't want them to be the exact same so I made them a little different. I changed the designs, I made a different animal, and i changed the texture. So I did use some inspiration from Pinterest but put my own twist to it. This artwork is about what I like because it is different, it tells a story, its not plain and boring. There were some challenges to the creation of these cups but I either asked for some help or just figured out a different way to do things.
Slab Tiles
When I was carving my tiles out I added clay to make some pop out then I also took away some clay to give it texture and depth, also I made my own borders. It was difficult trying to figure out what to add and what to carve out, I needed to think about whether I wanted my figures carved out or left up. I would ask myself different questions in my head about what I could do to make my slabs better and I would try different things and if it didn't look good or I didn't like it I would just try again.
Lidded Vessle
I made a jewelry box as my lidded vessel. I used slabs to make this. I cut out all the slabs then I let them dry a little and then put the designs on it before i put it together. Then I made a box out of it and let it dry some more then I cut out the lid. I made a little sea shell handle and put that on. When I fired it the lid fit good, then I glazed it and when it came out of the glaze fire it was off a little bit, but it still will work for my needs!
Colored Clay Techniques
Marbling
For marbling clay on the wheel you will set two colors of clay next to each other on the wheel, then you make your bowl or cup or whatever. Then you let it dry a little and once its dry you can use a ribbon tool and make designs with your color clay to make it look more marbled. Yes we can use this technique in class.
Nerikomi
This was made by making different designs with two or more colors of clay and then cutting it into pieces to get the design you want. Then you can put the design on whatever you want, like a plate or bowl. Yes we can definitely use this technique in class!
Colored Clay Set
I made a set of bowls. One of them I made it with the grey clay and I made designs with the red clay and grey clay, then I put them on the grey clay and rolled it on. Then I used a hump mold to place my clay on to get the bowl form. Then I made a second one with red clay and put some of the designs on it with the red and grey clay and used the same hump mold to get another bowl. I used Nerikomi style for my colored clay set.
Food Specific
I made a chip and dip bowl. I made a little bowl using the pinch pot technique. Then I made a bigger bowl over a hump mold to create the big bowl. It has tall sides and short sides to make it different. Then when the bowl was leather hard I scored and slipped the little bowl onto the bigger bowl. Then I had a cool different chip and dip bowl.
Master Artist
My master artist was Winslow Homer. The picture "The Fog Warming" was my inspiration picture. I made a boat and oars for my project. I made the boat out of slabs, I cut the slabs out then let them dry enough for them to stay up. Then I made the oars out of coils. Homer is such an amazing artist, I even did a speech on him in my one class.
